Capoeira was created as a form of resistance against oppression. Born out of the struggle of African slaves brought to Brazil during the 16th century – It combines elements of martial arts, dance and music. Capoeira remained a criminal offence in Brazil for many years until the 1930s when Mestre Bimba, the creator of Capoeira regional, managed to convince the authorities that Capoeira was a truly Brazilian Artform. Subsequently, Capoeira was legalised and declared Brazil’s national sport.

Today, Capoeira is played across the world from the shores of Bahia to the old port of Marseille. Of course, the game has changed and developed tremendously over the past decades but its roots and philosophy should always be remembered and respected.
